A Tale of
South is South But North Is Not North
In Northeastern Europe, Germany was getting tired of the cost from reunification with their eastern poor counterparts. Then voter sacrifices were needed to implement economic structural reforms needed to reverse slow economic growth. Then some asked Germans to bail out Southern Europe where bankers had allowed people and politicians to game their political systems. More recently Spain's Catalan citizens have demonstrate for independence in hopes of avoiding taxes to help poor Southern provinces.
Meanwhile in the US wealthy northeast and western states have continued their efforts to help the southern and other rural areas. They have agreed to pat much of the Obamacare costs, increased Medicaid benefits and wanted increases in most safety net programs.
Nevertheless U.S. poor states do not want
The cost of almost all government programs is too high. They want guns, self- determination when it comes to their poor.
Yet they lobby to lower taxes and send even less money to Washington.
A look at 2010 Census and IRS data reveals that the 50 states and
the District of Columbia, on average, received $1.29 in federal
spending for every federal tax dollar they paid. That means that
some states are getting a lot more than they put in, and vice versa.
The states that contributed more in taxes than they got back in
spending were more likely to have voted for Obama in 2008 and were
more likely to be urban while rural southern states were most likely
on the receiving end. No wonder they are so hospitable! Like in Germany, the US northeast
and west have the wealth which is redistributed to the south but the
US south will take only what they want and give little in return!. Source
In 2012 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that at least 30 percent of US adults were obese in these 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. These are the southern rural states that votes against fixing anything their Founding Fathers created 350 years ago. You know, the Founding Fathers who felt only white male landowners (the wealth) should vote, used anti rural tariffs as their preferred source of government revenue and created separation of church and state to protect government from religion.
One-hundred quantitative economist were asked to go into room one if they were Keynesian and room two if they were Monetarists. About fifty went into each room. Asked to analyze the same data set, the Keynesian said "see I told you government spending works" and the Monetarist said "see I told you government spending doesn't work." I think the data had to do with QE2, or was it education, or health care, or was it...Western Economists scoffed as Soviet conomists/mathematicians as they used complex mathematic econometric models to mimic the efficiency of market based capitalism. Soviets mathematicians were successful until they failed. These same Western economists/mathematicians eventually developed complex mathematical financial models and sophisticated financial instruments to guarantee their users would make money on Wall Street. Alan Greenspan assured everyone that financial regulation was not needed, as Wall Street banker self-interest would properly manage the competitive marketplace. These models and the lack or regulation worked well until they did not work well.
In the late- 1990s Western economists declared the current long-term economic moderation meant very small future recessions and the end of the business cycle. Recessions were small until they were big.
Now Ben Bernanke who failed to
forecast the Great Recession tells use unwinding recent excess reserve
called QE will not lead to inflation. He' will soon be looking for work,
maybe Trump will introduce him to his Soviet friends.
